The WDPAC jrs Repertory Company is so much more than putting on plays featuring children and unique among other such programs in Central Florida.  Most significantly, there is NO cost to families for their children to participate in the productions.  Auditions are open to any child, regardless of skill level, grades 1-12.

Barb Kellar, educator at Seminole County’s Midway Elementary Arts Magnet School, is a frequent director of the WDPAC jrs Productions.  She can attest to the uniqueness of this program.  As she says, “this isn’t just a kid’s show, but a true junior version of theatrical productions performed by adult companies”.   WDPAC jrs sometimes produces talent that go on to the adult Repertory Company at WDPAC and other venues.  Barb, refers to this as the Farm Team approach.

Participants are given the opportunity to participate to the full extent of their skills, learn new skills and develop overall.  In fact, children do not need performance or theatre experience to be selected for a show.  Desire and a willingness to project their personality is what is looked for in auditions.  There are also opportunities for children who would prefer to learn the backstage and stage management skills.

During school summer vacation, two camps are held – one for the youngest grades 1-3 and one for grades 4-12.  The camp culminates in a stage production presented at the theatre.  There are fees to participate in the Summer Camp.

Do the WDPAC jrs really make a difference?
  • Besides the theatrical skills, participation helps with reading, thinking on your feet, problem-solving and socialization.
  • Barb gave examples of past participants who have gone on to earn scholarships at the university-level.
  • There have been past participants who have returned to be a part of the directorial team and camp assistants.
  • Several past participants have been selected to be cast members for the WDPAC Repertory Company productions while still at the Junior level.
